Intimidators Blank Shorebirds 3-0 to Take Sole Possession of First Place of Northern Division
April 23, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
The Kannapolis Intimidators (12-6) used a dominant six innings on the mound from Blake Battenfield (W, 1-1) to beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-0 Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium and take sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic League Northern division.
With a season-high eight strikeouts through six innings on the bump, Battenfield cruised through the Shorebirds (12-6) high-powered lineup, capping off his stellar night with back-to-back strikeouts to Delmarva's Zach Jarrett and Kirvin Moesquit in the sixth, before handing the ball over to Jake Elliot (H, 3) and Jose Nin (S, 1).
The Intimidators got on the board in the fifth, as Michael Hickman smacked a leadoff double to center field, followed by a bunt-single from Laz Rivera to put runners at the corners for Tyler Frost. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Rivera stole second base to put two runners in scoring position for the eight hole hitter, Frost, who got hit by the fifth pitch thrown his way, loading the bases for Carlos Perez.
After a groundball to third off the bat of Perez that ended with an out at the plate, leadoff hitter Luis Gonzalez drew a five-pitch walk to bring in Rivera for the game's first run.
Two innings later in the seventh, Justin Yurchak earned a free pass to first after a 10-pitch at-bat, including four straight foul balls with a 3-2 count on the Kannapolis first baseman. Nolan Brown followed the lengthy at-bat with a bunt-single, bringing up Anthony Villa for the I's. The California native laced a 3-0 pitch down the right field line, scoring both Yurchak and Brown to give the Intimidators a 3-0 lead.
In the ninth, Manager Justin Jirschele went to hard throwing Nin, who worked around back-to-back singles from Jarrett and T.J. Nichting to retire the last three outs of the game via flyouts.
The I's will look to continue their five-game win streak Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium against the Shorebirds.
