Zac Lowther Named SAL Pitcher of the Week
April 23, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - After building on the tone he set in his scintillating first start, the Delmarva Shorebirds are pleased to announce that left-handed pitcher Zac Lowther has been named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 16-22.
The 21-year-old from Brooklyn Heights, Ohio made two starts last week, going 1-1 with a 0.90 ERA, one walk, and 18 strikeouts in 10 innings of work. He won his first start on April 17, scattering three hits over five innings and striking out nine to lead the Shorebirds in the first game of a doubleheader at Hagerstown.
Lowther was dealt a hard-luck loss on Sunday afternoon against Lakewood, limiting the BlueClaws to one run on two hits over five innings while walking one and striking out 11.
Through three starts this season, Lowther is 2-1 with a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings of work. He currently leads the SAL in both ERA and strikeouts (31). The former Xavier Musketeer and 2017 second-rounder began the season on a 14.2-inning scoreless streak, which Lakewood broke up in the fourth inning on Sunday. Counting his final start of 2017 in short-season Aberdeen, Lowther had not given up a run in 18.2 consecutive innings. He also had an 11-inning hitless streak that Hagerstown broke up last Tuesday.
Behind Lowther, the No. 17 prospect in the Baltimore Orioles farm system, Shorebirds starters boast a combined 2.41 ERA through 17 starts this season. First-place Delmarva's 2.61 team ERA currently sits second in the SAL.
This is the first honor for Lowther in the South Atlantic League and the first weekly honor of his minor league career. He was also a midseason all-star in the New York-Penn League last year for Aberdeen.
