Feistiness is becoming a characteristic for the Des Moines Buccaneers through three preseason games thanks to series of emotionally charged contests rare during any exhibition schedule. The Buccaneers fell 3-2 to Sioux Falls on Sunday in a game that featured 150 minutes in penalties and an ever present air of tension between the teams.

In the end, taking advantage of the numerous power plays was the difference as Sioux Falls went 2/9 while the Buccaneers were 0/7.

Despite the defeat, the Buccaneers received another encouraging outing from their two new goaltenders as Jason Kasdorf stopped 17 of 19 shots in the first 30 minutes and Christian Frey made 13 saves on 14 shots to end the game. The Buccaneers were also able to see significant ice time from a number of their junior hockey rookies.

One of those newbies made an immediate impact as Cal Hofford put the Bucs on the scoreboard first midway through the opening period when his slap shot from the left point snaked through traffic and passed Sioux Falls' goalie Charlie Lindgren's stick side.

Sioux Falls stormed back as play turned chippy in the second period keeping a majority of the play in the Des Moines end over the first 11 minutes. Ryan Gaffney finished off a two-on-breakout with Todd Skivering by tapping the puck past a helpless Jason Kasdorf from close range to even the score at 1:42.

Sioux Falls' Justin Selman, who played for the Buccaneers last season, put the Stampede ahead with a powerplay goal at 6:15 in the period.

Des Moines newcomer Tyler Poulson had a chance late in the second to tie the score on a breakaway but his forehand attempt was stymied by Lindgren who stretched out his left leg and met the puck at the post just in time.

The character of the game was one of countless hitting, a number of post-whistle scuffles and two fights. A tenacity existed that would never ease between the teams playing each other for the second time within 24 hours, even lasted through the second intermission and into the third.

Mac Olson drew the Bucs even only 49 seconds into the third period, firing a wrister from the slot passed Lindgren's stick side on a delayed penalty call. However, a series of altercations moments later that led to the game ejection of Poulson, gave Sioux Falls a power play they capitalized on as Ian Mansfield tallied.

Des Moines would pepper Lindgren over the final 18 minutes but wouldn't get the tying goal before time expired.
