Indians Take Three of Four from Yankees with 7-2 Victory in Series Finale

Rochester, NY - Saturday night the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees came back to beat the Indianapolis Indians in extra innings. The teams reversed roles on Sunday night as the Indians defeated the Yankees 7-2 in the series finale of a four game set at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York.

The Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first when Chris Dickerson sent his fifth homer of the year into the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen just beyond the left field wall. The Yankees added one more in the bottom of the second. Brandon Laird reached when his Major League fly ball towards first base fell to the ground when the Indians infield lost it in the sun. Laird then went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Francisco Cervelli. Later in the inning Kosuke Fukudome crushed an RBI double off the top of the left field wall, bringing home Laird from second and making it a 2-0 ball game in favor of the Yankees.

The Indians cut the Yankee lead in half in the top half of the fifth. Jeff Larish led off the inning with a walk, Brandon Boggs singled and Jose Morales bunted each of them up a base, giving the Indians 2nd and 3rd with just one out. Anderson Hernandez then roped an RBI single to score Larish from third. Ortiz then got Chase d'Arnaud to ground into a double play to end the inning and preserve the 2-1 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead.

The Indians capitalized on some bad luck in the Yankee outfield in the top of the fifth. Jeff Clament and Yamaico Navarro hit back-to-back fly balls, which were lost in the lights by Yankee outfielders. The misfortune resulted in a total of three runs and Indianapolis added two more in the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Matt Hague completed the scoring for Indianapolis with a sacrifice fly in the top half of the ninth making it a 7-2 ballgame.

Ramon Ortiz (9-5) suffered the loss despite tossing seven innings. The veteran right-hander allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking one in the outing. Rick VandenHurk (11-3) tossed seven innings allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out seven in a winning effort for the Indians.

With the Yankees loss and Pawtucket win, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is now in second place in the International League North division. Even with the loss the Yankees remain 0.5 games up on Lehigh Valley in the International League wildcard race.

Despite wrapping up their 38 home games in Rochester on Sunday night, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees will stay at Frontier Field and begin a four game series with the Rochester Red Wings on Monday evening at 7:05. Justin Thomas gets the nod for the Yankees, while Pedro Hernandez takes the ball for the Red Wings.
