Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the first game of their four game series with the Indianapolis Indians 8-5 Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The loss drops the Chiefs to a first-place tie with Louisville in the Wild Card race. Syracuse has now lost seven games in a row, a season high.
The Chiefs went on top 1-0 in the first after a Jason Botts double to right center brought home Boomer Whiting from third. Botts finished the night two for four to raise his season average to .307.
Syracuse added to its lead with another run in the second. After Pete Orr was caught stealing third for the inning's second out, Carlos Maldonado belted a homer over the fence in right. The solo shot was Maldonado's third of the year.
The Indians stormed back for two runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take the lead.
In the third, Brandon Moss drilled a two-out double to center, sending home Charlie Morton and Alex Presley for Indianapolis's first two runs of the night.
Jonathan Van Every led off the fourth by slamming a Shairon Martis fastball past the right field wall for his ninth home run. Luke Carlin and Argenis Diaz followed by mashing singles to right. After walking Brian Friday to load the bases, Akinori Iwamura picked up another walk, bringing home Carlin from third. After Presley's single in the next at-bat scored another Indianapolis run, the Indians collected their final run of the inning on a Moss groundout to first. Moss's three RBI Tuesday night give him 66 for the season, the second highest total in the league behind Durham's Dan Johnson (91).
The Chiefs rallied for three runs in the seventh and eighth innings, narrowing the gap to 8-5. Kevin Mench's pinch hit double to left center in the seventh gave Syracuse their third and fourth runs of the night. An inning later, Seth Bynum hammered a long fly ball out of the park to make it a three-run game. Bynum is now tied for second on the team in homeruns with Leonard Davis with 10 long balls.
Shairon Martis took his sixth loss of the season. The Chiefs starter lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out one. It was the second straight start in which Martis has pitched less than four innings after pitching at least five frames in each of his previous 14 starts.
Indianapolis starter Charlie Morton won for the third time. He tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out seven and walking two. Lefthander Daniel Moskos escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his first save.
The Chiefs and Indians will square off again Wednesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Major league rehabber Jason Marquis will get the start for Syracuse. He'll go up against Indianapolis righty Mike Crotta (5-5, 5.00). First pitch will be at 7:00.
