Indianapolis used a five-run sixth inning to halt the Hens' attempt at expanding upon their previous three-game winning streak and take a 9-2 series-opener win. Indianapolis recorded 17 hits on the night.

Clay Holmes, the Indianapolis starter, looked as if he had Toledo's lineup figured out early, limiting them to just two hits through four innings. However, the Hens' bats gave him enough trouble in the fifth to run his pitch count up, thus knocking him out and preventing him from recording a win. Bryan Holaday got things started with a double in the gap to right-center. Argenis Diaz ripped a single to right, but it was hit so hard Holaday had to be held at third. That would be a moot point, though, as Alex Presley lined a ball up the middle to bring in Holaday and Diaz, who moved to second on a wild pitch during Presley's at-bat.

Mud Hens starter A.J. Ladwig, in his Triple-A debut after being called up from Single-A Lakeland, was done in in part by back-to-back two-run innings by the Indians. With one out in the second, Ladwig gave up a single to Erich Weiss and immediately gave up a double down the left-field line to put runners on second and third. After getting Joey Terdoslavich to fly out, he left a 3-1 fastball at the waist to catcher Jacob Stallings, who got on top of it and lined it into center to score the two runners.

His next inning followed a similar trend, as Indianapolis put two more on the board. Chris Bostick was the instigator here, singling up the middle with one out to begin the rally. Max Moroff would follow with another single. Again, Ladwig appeared as if he would sneak out of it, but a potential inning-ending double play was spoiled when Austin Meadows beat out the back end of the 4-6-3 as Bostick touched home. A Jason Rogers infield single moved Meadows to third before Weiss brought him in with his second single of the game.

Though he navigated through the fourth and fifth, it was the sixth where Ladwig's debut would end. Terdoslavich got the sixth started off right away when he doubled down the right-field line. Stallings picked up another hit with a single up the middle, thus calling for the end to Ladwig's night. Mike Zagurski was called upon to relieve Ladwig, but the Indians had different plans; they proceeded to bat around and score five runs, blowing the game open. Zagurski did strike out Danny Ortiz to begin his night but then gave up a single to Bostick and walk to Moroff. Meadows stepped up and doubled home everyone and was brought home himself when Rogers hit a double of his own. Zagurski struck out Weiss and Eric Wood to put an end to it, but the Hens went back into the dugout trailing 9-2.

The Hens went quietly in the eighth and ninth. Lefty Kyle Ryan entered and pitched two scoreless for the Hens, walking one and striking out three while giving up two hits.

The Mud Hens will look to answer back on Wednesday when they will meet the Indians in a daytime contest at 1:35 p.m.
