Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros, in conjunction with the Cleveland Indians would like to welcome former Aeros Manager Joel Skinner back to Akron. Skinner was named the Aeros Manager on Tuesday after serving as a coach with the Indians since 2000. Skinner returns to the Aeros after managing here during the 1998 and 1999 seasons when he was named the USA Today Baseball Weekly's Minor League Manager of the Year. Skinner led the Aeros to an 80-61 record during his first season as Manager. "We look forward to welcoming Joel back to Akron, after building a great relationship with him during the '98 and '99 seasons; we also look to build on the success of the 2009 season. Joel has had success here in the past and we expect nothing to change in 2010," said Aeros VP Jeff Auman.
Since leaving the Aeros after the 1999 season, Skinner went on to manage the Buffalo Bison, then the Triple A Affiliate of the Indians. Skinner's managerial skills again did not go unnoticed when he received the Minor League Manager of the Year Award from Baseball America and The Sporting News as well as International League Manager of the Year. In late 2000, Skinner was named to the Indians Coaching Staff where he remained until the conclusion of the 2009 season.
Former 2009 Aeros Manager Mike Sarbaugh has been selected to lead the Triple-A Club in Columbus for the 2010 season. Sarbaugh has been a part of the Indians organization since 2000 where he served as the Aeros Hitting Coach. During his time managing the Aeros, Sarbaugh had a record of 169-115. Sarbaugh has had success at every level of the Indians organization winning titles with Mahoning Valley (2004), Kinston (2006) and Akron (2009).
The Aeros begin defense of their 2009 Eastern League Championship Thursday, April 8th against the Binghamton Mets in Binghamton, NY.
