Indians knock off Knights

June 2, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Left fielder Rajai Davis extended his career-best hitting streak to 20 games, while Japanese legend Masumi Kuwata made his first regular-season appearance in the United States as Indianapolis posted a 9-5 win over Charlotte in front of 10,386 Saturday night at Victory Field.

The Indians improve to 32-22 overall and 16-12 at home, while the Knights fall to 23-32 on the season and 7-17 on the road. Sunday will be the Tribe's 48th consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.

Davis (1-for-3, 1 RBI) has recorded at least one base knock in every game since May 12. The streak ranks as the longest of his seven-year professional career and the IL's second-longest this season. The 26-year-old is hitting .360 with 14 runs and 12 RBI during the stretch.

Kuwata (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 SO) worked the fourth inning in his first regular-season outing on American soil.

The Tribe cracked the scoreboard in the second when C David Parrish (2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) brought CF Luis Matos (2-for-5, 2 R) plateward with a double to center. Davis followed with an RBI groundout to score SS Luis Ordaz (1-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI).

Charlotte C Gustavo Molina (3-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) and 2B Jason Bourgeois (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) each crossed the plate in the third to even the contest at two.

Indianapolis went on to score seven unanswered runs. In the fifth, DH Jose Hernandez (3-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) smacked his fifth roundtripper of the season -- a two-run bomb to right center. In the sixth, Parrish belted his second Triple-A long ball of 2007 -- a solo shot to left.

In the seventh, Indians 2B Nick Green (1-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) scored Hernandez with a single to left. Green then came plateward on Ordaz's double to left, while Matos wrapped up the scoring by trotting home on a wild pitch.

The Knights had the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth, but they were only able to manufacture three runs as Indians RHP Dan Kolb (1.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 SO) worked his way out of a jam.

Knuckle ball specialist Charlie Haeger (5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss. The Charlotte right-hander is now 2-8 on the season.

The two teams return to Victory Field on Sunday at 2 p.m., for game three of the four-game set. RHP John Van Benschoten is expected to take the hill for Indianapolis, while RHP Vladimir Nunez is scheduled to start for Charlotte.

The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.

The first 4,000 fans receive an Indians Golf Umbrella courtesy of Community Health Network. Members of the WISH-TV/Indians Knot Hole Club will also be invited to run the bases after the game.
