Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - Josh Hamilton started the Bats offense in the first inning with a two-run home run and Pedro Lopez hit the game clinching two-run home run in the sixth inning as the Bats defeated the Bulls, 7-5 on Saturday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Tied at 4-4, RHP Steve Andrade (2-1) relieved RHP Jason Hammel in the sixth inning, but was unable to maintain the stalemate. With two outs and one on, Lopez hit a towering home run over the Blue Monster to give the Bats a 6-4 lead. Mark Bellhorn added an insurance run in the seventh when he scored Aaron Herr from third with a base hit. The Bulls tried to rally in the ninth inning and managed to score a run when Josh Hamilton dropped what would have been the game-ending out in center field, but Hamilton redeemed himself during the next at bat when Justin Ruggiano hit another fly ball to center field, which Hamilton successfully grabbed.

Most of the scoring took place in the first inning when the Bats scored two runs off of Hamilton's homer in the top of the inning and the Bulls responded with three runs in the bottom half. Jorge Velandia hit a two-run home run over the Blue Monster and Jonny Gomes scored from third on a wild pitch from Bats RHP Homer Bailey to give the Bulls an early 3-2 lead. The Bats took the lead back with two runs in the third inning before the Bulls tied it at four with a run in the fifth inning.

Hammel and Bailey both allowed four runs, seven hits and three walks, but Hammel struck out nine Louisville batters in five innings of work while Bailey pitched six innings and struck out eight. RHP Ricky Stone earned the save after getting the final out in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bulls and Bats will meet again on Sunday evening at 5 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
