Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- After a brief but valiant postseason run, the Indianapolis Indians have placed their game-worn red playoff jerseys in an online auction for purchase by fans.
The red jerseys were new for 2012 and were also worn for Monday night home games throughout the regular season. Winners of the auction will receive a certificate of authenticity along with their jersey.
Each jersey is emblazoned with name and number of the player or coach who wore it during the 2012 postseason series against the Charlotte Knights. Among those available are manager Dean Treanor (#27), pitching coach Tom Filer (#46), hitting coach Jeff Branson (#10) and first base coach Wyatt Toregas (#15).
Filer, Branson and Toregas each spent time in the major leagues as players.
Recent major league call-ups who have jerseys available to bidding include infielder Chase d'Arnaud (#2), outfielder Starling Marte (#6) and right-handed pitchers Rick VandenHurk (#32) and Bryan Morris (#38). In four postseason games, d'Arnaud batted .333 (6-for-18) with a double, a home run, five RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases.
Other 2012 playoff standouts available are righty starter Phil Irwin (#49), who picked up the Tribe's lone postseason win while tossing 7.0 scoreless innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, and designated hitter Yamaico Navarro (#26), who batted .438 (7-for-16) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored.
Regular season heroes are also available. Utility infielder Anderson Hernandez (#12) played four positions and helped turn 42 double plays en route to being named the Tribe's Defensive Player of the Year and outfield Brandon Boggs (#25) appeared in a team-high 127 games and ranked in the top five in at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, total bases and walks to earn the Offensive Player of the Year title.
Tribe members who played in Indianapolis in 2012 but were promoted to Pittsburgh prior to the playoffs also have their regular season jerseys available for auction. Those players include infielders Brock Holt (#17) and Jeff Clement (#14), catcher Eric Fryer (#50), outfielder Alex Presley (#7) and left-handed pitchers Jeff Locke (#31) and Justin Wilson (#45). In a three-week stint with the Indians, Holt batted .432 (41-for-95); in nine games as of Monday, Holt has batted .361 (13-for-36) since making his major league debut for the Pirates.
Fans with an eye toward to future may also be interested in the jerseys of right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole (#35) and catcher Tony Sanchez (#19). Coming into the season, Baseball America ranked Cole as Pittsburgh's No. 1 prospect and Sanchez ranked No. 7.
These jerseys and more can be viewed, along with sizes and current bids, at www.IndyIndians.com. The auction ends on Friday, September 21, with bidding on individual jerseys closing at varying times between 6 and 9:46 p.m.
