Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Starting pitcher Ty Taubenheim struck out six and allowed just one run in five frames, while the Tribe offense plated four scores in the very first inning to help the Indianapolis Indians take down the Toledo Mud Hens 6-3 on Sunday night at Fifth Third Field.
With the win the Indians improve to 68-67 overall and 33-36 on the road, while the Mud Hens fall to 68-67 overall and 37-32 at home with the loss. The win for Indianapolis gives them the 3-1 series victory as well as the advantage in the season series 10-8.
Taubenheim (5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO), whose start was pushed up a day, was exceptional as he allowed just one run on five hits and struck out six compared to one walk in five innings of work. The right hander moves to 7-9 on the season and has won his last two starts giving up just two earned runs in 10.1 innings for a 1.78 ERA during that span.
The Tribe starter received early help from his offense which put up four runs in the very first inning of Sunday's contest. The first five batters of the game for the Indians all reached base as RF Jose Tabata and 2B Pedro Lopez led off with back-to-back walks before CF Jeff Salazar singled to load the bases.
With the bases loaded Toledo starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis again walked two consecutive Tribe hitters, LF Brian Myrow and 1B Tagg Bozied, which allowed Tabata and Lopez to trot home for the first scores of the game. With the bases still full the Mud Hens escaped an even larger inning as they were able to turn a 5-2-3 double play to record the first two outs of the frame.
However, the Indians would come through with two outs when C Hector Gimenez came through in the clutch with a two-run single up the middle. The base knock scored Myrow and Bozied and gave Indianapolis the early 4-0 advantage which would be more than enough for Tribe pitching.
Willis (4.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 8 BB, 1 SO) would go on to allow one more earned run and was pinned with the loss giving up a total of five scores on three hits in just four innings of work. The former National League Rookie of the Year also walked eight Indianapolis hitters, the most by a single pitcher against the Indians this season.
Taubenheim, however would give up his lone run to the Mud Hens in the bottom half of the second. Toledo LF Jeff Frazier ripped a double to left-center with two outs before he was brought plateward on an RBI single by CF Wilkin Ramirez in the very next at-bat.
The run would be the first of just three Toledo scores in the contest as Taubenheim buckled down before giving way to the Tribe bullpen. RHP Jeff Karstens (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 SO), on Major League rehab from the Pirates, replaced the Indians' starter in the sixth and gave up just two hits and struck out three in two scoreless frames of relief.
Karstens was followed by RHP Juan Mateo (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB) who allowed one run on two hits in the eighth and RHP Jean Machi (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB) who gave up one run on one hit in the ninth.
After a hot start and a dominant performance from their pitching the Indians would add onto their lead with a run in the fifth and sixth. Again walks harmed Willis as he handed out free passes to Tabata, Lopez and Salazar to begin the fifth before being replaced by Toledo RHP Zach Simons.
Simons' entered and a run scored immediately when Tabata sprinted home on a passed ball by Mud Hens' C Dane Sardinha. However, Toledo would avoid another big inning as the passed ball would be the only score of the frame.
The Indians though tallied another run in the very next inning to push their advantage to 6-1. Gimenez began the sixth with a single before a base knock by SS Argenis Diaz moved him to third and a sacrifice fly from Tabata brought him plateward.
Gimenez (2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Myrow (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 IBB) would record multiple hits for the Indians, while Tabata (1-for-2, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 BB), Lopez (0-for-3, 1 R, 2 BB) and Myrow all tallied multiple walks in the contest. Toledo received multi-hit efforts from 2B Will Rhymes (2-for-5, 1 R), SS Don Kelly (2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI) and Ramirez (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI), but the Mud Hens' were only able to put up three runs on 10 hits in the game.
Toledo was able to manage a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but it was too little too late as the Indians held them off for the 6-3 victory. The win pushes Indianapolis over .500 for the first time this season, while it also ties them with the Mud Hens for second place in the International League West.
Indianapolis looks to continue their success against Toledo as the two teams begin a three-game series at Victory Field on Monday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Jeremy Powell is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Scot Drucker is expected to get the nod for the Mud Hens.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.

Post-game quote -- RHP Ty Taubenheim
(on being over .500 for the first time this season)
"It's a great feeling. I know we've been at the .500 mark a handful of times and we haven't been able to come through so it feels good to be on the winning side of that mark."
(on starting a day earlier than expected)
"I don't mind the short rest the only drawback on it is that you're not going to have as long a leash as you normally would on your full days of rest. So I only had 70 to 75 pitches to work with tonight. Being kind of new to starting again this season I was already kind of restricted, but five innings went by and I felt good and we won."
(on what was working for him on Sunday)
"I think I had really good fastball command and I didn't really walk anybody. They (Toledo) are such a good fastball hitting team that if you locate it they are a little more apt to swing at it. You don't want to leave it over the plate, but some guys will chase and some guys won't. You've just got to stick with whatever game plan you bring."
