Too Many Men Left on Doom Tides

August 30, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk pounded out 15 hits but left 12 men on base in an 8-6 setback to Charlotte Sunday night at Harbor Park.

Charlotte jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the contest, but Norfolk scored single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to cut the deficit in half before Jeff Fiorentino's two-run, eighth inning single brought the Tides within two. Norfolk then put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth inning, but Charlotte reliever Jhonny Nunez retired Melvin Dorta and Blake Davis to escape the threat and register his second save of the season.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Tides and dropped their record to 67-67, putting Norfolk at .500 for the first time since they were 4-4 on April 17. Norfolk had been a season-high 19 games over .500 when they opened June with a 34-15 record.

Fiorentino paced Norfolk's offense with four hits and three runs batted in, while Brandon Pinckney and Rhyne Hughes each added three hits apiece.

Michael Restovich and Justin Knoedler each hit solo homers for the Knights, while Wilson Betemit connected on three of Charlotte's five doubles.

Chris Waters (9-6) took the loss as he yielded eight runs - six earned - on ten hits before being removed before he could record an out in a four-run fifth inning. Waters had entered the contest 3-0 with a 1.02 ERA in four appearances against the Knights this season.

The Tides and Knights will continue their four-game set on Monday night, with Norfolk scheduled to send right-hander David Pauley (9-11, 4.41) to the mound for the 7:15 contest. Charlotte will counter with right-hander Daniel Hudson (2-0, 3.43), a 2005 graduate of Princess Anne High School who attended Old Dominion. Hudson has 14 wins across four minor league levels this season, a total that is tied for the most among all White Sox minor leaguers.
