Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release

Cedar Rapids- Brent Gwidt scored two goals- including the shorthanded game winner- and Brett Bennett was often spectacular in stopping 33 shots as the Indiana Ice defeated the host RoughRiders 3-1 Friday night.

The Ice took a 1-0 lead on Gwidt's wraparound goal at 6:46 of the first period.

Ice was down a man when Gwidt back handed home his second at 16:12 of the second period.

The Riders converted a two-man advantage to pull back within one early in the third period. Robin Bergman swept the puck past Bennett to trim the gap to 2-1 at 3:09 mark of the third.

Indiana responded with a power play goal of its own, reestablishing the two-goal lead when Brandon Richardson buried Shane Berschbach's cross-crease pass just past the midway point of third.

In addition to receiving a sterling effort from Bennett- who was at his at his busiest while making 14 saves in the third period alone- the Ice also may have caught some breaks on the way to the win. The Riders' Brett Gensler, while being impeded from behind, staggered in alone late in the second period to pull the trigger on a shot that lit the goal light- only for it to be ruled the puck never crossed the goal line and for Gensler to be awarded penalty shot, which he was unable to convert. In the third period it appeared the Riders' Nick Oddo fired the puck up under the cross bar and into the net before it caromed straight back out, but it was ruled the puck hit the bar itself and again no goal was awarded.
