Charlotte Independence News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC- The Charlotte Independence on Friday afternoon announced the signing of midfielder David Spies. The 22 year old is immediately eligible to play in the USL club's next match at Toronto FC II on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Spies was born in Herdecke, Germany, and has dual citizenship between Germany and the United States. He began his career with Bundesliga club VFL Bochum as a U17 and U19 player. During his U19 season in the winter of 2013, Spies was transferred to FC Nî1/4rnberg. The club offered Spies a pro contract for the U23 team once he was no longer eligible as a U19.
In the summer of 2015, FC Augsburg acquired the transfer rights of Spies and had the midfielder training with the first team. He appeared in a few friendlies for FC Augsburg but no league matches outside the U23 squad.
Spies now joins an Independence team that is 12-7-6 (42 points) and sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings with five regular-season games remaining. Following the Sept. 4 contest at TFCII, the Independence will return home to Ramblewood Stadium to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:00pm ET.
