Independence from Frisco; 'Hounds Win, 3-1
July 4, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Midland RockHounds News Release
The RockHounds gained their "independence" from the Frisco with a 3-1 win on the Fourth of July in the finale of a six-game series at Riders Field.
A three-run fifth inning was the difference as the 'Hounds broke a scoreless tie, and the "hat trick" was enough thanks to outstanding pitching.
Kyle McCann dropped down a bunt single with one out in the fifth to start the rally. Chase Calabuig (extending his hit streak to eight games) singled and went to second base on a throwing error by Frisco right fielder Josh Stowers. RBI singles from Mickey McDonald and Nick Allen brought in the game's first two runs and Logan Davidson capped the inning with an RBI double.
Stowers atoned for the throwing error with a solo home run in the sixth, but that would be all of Frisco's offense.
Bryce Conley (see "Kibbles & Bits," below) tossed four shutout innings to open the game. Matt Milburn (who has just joined the RockHounds from Triple-A Las Vegas) went two innings, allowing only Stowers' solo home run and earned the win. Zack Erwin (hold) pitched a scoreless seventh and Aaron Brown earned his second two-inning ("old school") save of the series to close the game.
Monday is a league-wide off day with the RockHounds then opening a six-game series at Corpus Christi (Tuesday through Sunday). The six-gamer with the Hooks will complete the (12-game) road trip and a stretch in which the club is playing 24-of-30 games on the road.
Kibbles & Bits
Despite the loss Sunday, the RoughRiders still have (by far) the Double-A Central's best record (36-18). The easy "math" says Frisco is winning 2-of-every-3 games it plays. The RockHounds have played the Riders tough all season. The clubs have meet three times (twice in Frisco) ... with the home team taking 4-of-6 in each of the three series. That means the RoughRiders are 10-8 against the RockHounds (with two series at home) and 26-10 against the rest of the league.
Frisco has won 14-of-16 games, the only two losses in that span coming against the RockHounds.
Bryce Conley drew the tough assignment of facing Frisco twice in the six-game series and was outstanding. Facing the league's top club, the right-hander went 1-0, with a 0.90 ERA in two starts. He went a combined 10 innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He did walk seven batters but the bases on balls did little (if any) damage) and Bryce also struck out seven RoughRiders in the two starts.
