In Their Own Words: "Everyone Trusts What We'Re Doing, and We Know We'll Get Through ThisâÃâ¬ÃÂ
June 9, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
After three consecutive matches in Sacramento, the squad hits the road for a midweek matchup in the mountains on Wednesday night against Real Monarchs.
The Indomitable Club recently completed a three-game homestand and the match in Utah will be the first of two straight away fixtures before returning home on June 26 to a stadium that will be able to return to full capacity.
But Republic FC's full attention is on the task at hand, a Wednesday night bout with Monarchs that is slated to kickoff at 7 p.m. PT.
Head Coach Mark Briggs
On the importance of keeping the teams spirits high...
"It's massively important. It's been a ten-day period, two-week period, and now all of a sudden, the wheels are falling off? No, that's not happening, we have too much quality. I trust what we're doing, everyone trusts what we're doing, and we know that we'll get through this. Everybody's upbeat - yes, we know we can be better, and we will do better but there's no need to press the emergency button."
On the level of focus in training...
"We've had some conversations, the players have had conversations themselves, we've had them as a whole group, and we've just said 'guys, we need to hit the reset button. We're in a hard phase, we're in a hard period, but we need to stick together, and we'll come out the other side.' So the focus has been very good as much as we can training in this period, it's been very good when we've been able to. We're looking forward to Wednesday and getting through that game and rest up, get some internationals back, hopefully get people healthy and come out the other side."
Mitchell Taintor
On if there's a sense of urgency...
"You never want to drop points, whether it's at home or on the road. All you really need to do is right the ship and continue to play better. As far as for this season, it's still pretty early but it's not up to what we want to be doing so we have to turn it around now and continue that through the rest of the season."
On how close the club is to returning to winning ways...
"I don't think it's anything major. Some people will be more dramatic than others but everyone internally, we're very confident in the guys we have, and everyone trusts that Mark [Briggs] is going to lead us in the right direction."
Jaime Villarreal
On how the team wants to respond on Wednesday...
"Every time we've gone down, we've always fought back. Didn't matter if it was 2-0, we had a red card, we just fought back. That's the emphasis going into this next game, to see if we can come out with that fire in the first half and see if we can dictate the game. With the group that we have, it's going to be a good turnaround."
On how close the team is to firing on all cylinders...
"I think we're close, we're starting to click. There are times in games where things aren't going our way offensively, but I think with injuries and guys being away on national team duty, it's kind of hard to have the whole squad together and gel together. Most of the goals that we concede are off of mistakes and simple errors that has nothing to do with tactics or anything like that. So, I think as pros, we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and say we have to do better."
