Idaho Rallies for Shootout Win

Boise, ID - The Idaho Steelheads overcame a sluggish start and a pair of two goal deficits Saturday to defeat the Bakersfield Condors, 5-4, at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.

The win improved Idaho to 8-2-2 on the season, including ten consecutive games without a loss in regulation. It also comes one night after Idaho squandered a late lead in a shootout loss to the same Bakersfield (4-7-2) squad.

The Steelheads came out flat, allowing Bakersfield to take a two-goal lead with a pair of tallies early in the second period. Idaho finally found its footing on the power play at 13:21 of the second when Andrew Carroll shoveled a rebound from below the goal line off the back of Bakersfield goaltender Brian Stewart and into the net, making it a 2-1 game. Idaho evened the score just over two minutes later when a Gord Baldwin shot was deflected onto the stick of Kael Mouillierat, who slammed home the back-door rebound for his eighth tally of the season, tying the game at two. It was Mouillierat's team-leading eighth goal of the season, one more than Carroll (7) and two more than King and Dowling (6)

The Condors took the lead back with just over a minute left in the second when Levi Nelson's rebound wound up behind Josh Robinson and in the net, giving Bakersfield a 3-2 lead after two periods.

Idaho came out firing in the third period, putting a season-high 23 shots on net in the period. However, it was Peter Boyd deflecting an Olivier Dame-Malka point shot past Robinson at 7:04 of the third to give the Condors a two-goal lead.

The Steelheads would rely on its high-powered power play to fight back. First, with Malka in the penalty box, Tristan King's one-timer from the top of the right-hand circle cut Bakersfield's lead to 4-3 with just over ten minutes to play. Then, with Robby Dee in the penalty box, Justin Dowling back-handed a rebound over an outstretched Stewart with just over four minutes left in regulation to tie the game at four.

Neither team could find the net in overtime, sending the game to a shootout. Mouillierat and Sam Carrick solved Stewart in the shootout for Idaho, while Robinson denied Levi Nelson, Peter Boyd, Tyler Brenner, and Jacob Lagace to seal the victory. Robinson is now 5-0-1 in net in his first professional season out of Michigan Tech.

Idaho's Dowling (one goal, three assists) and Bakersfield's Dame-Malka (one goal, three assists) each had four-point nights for their respective teams.

Idaho's power play came through Saturday, converting on three of six man-advantages. Bakersfield scored twice on the power play in six changes. Robinson finished the game with 32 saves, while Stewart stopped 39 shots for the Condors.

Idaho remains at home Wednesday night, taking on the Stockton Thunder at 7 PM at CenturyLink Arena. It is the only game Stockton plays in Boise during the regular season.
