Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - With games coming up this Thursday and Friday night, the Corpus Christi IceRays needed to shrink the roster down due to NAHL league policy. With that, Corpus Christi has traded and released players, while adding a goaltender to the roster along with a USHL defenseman.

The IceRays have traded (D) Travis Maxwell to the Minot Minotauros for a Tender, 2nd Round Draft Pick, and assets. Along with those, Corpus Christi also received the rights of (G) Ben Myers from Minot.

IceRays general manager Pat Dunn spoke highly of Maxwell, and how tough it was to see him go. "I have been in this business for a long time, I was traded as a player and I traded many others. It's never easy but you get over it," said Dunn. "Some trades are harder than others, this one with Travis ranks up in my top three. It's never easy to give up a good player like Maxi, but he is an even finer individual. It was a gut wrenching moment to see him go this morning but I hope that it works out good for both parties. One thing is for sure, Travis Maxwell has a bright future ahead of him and we'll miss him dearly. Minot will acquire one of the best kids I have met in hockey."

In 61 games with Corpus Christi that dated back to the beginning of last season, Maxwell picked up seven goals and 18 assists.

"We are sad to see Max go," said head coach Justin Quenneville. "But excited about the opportunity ahead for him in Minot. It was an honor developing and promoting a player and young man such as Travis to collegiate programs. He has a bright future ahead of him."

Ben Myers comes to South Texas from Minot but played in net last season for assistant coach Jeff Worlton while he was the bench boss for Flint in the NA3HL. "Ben is coming into a situation here where we already have two goalies and will be looking to take someone's job plain and simple," Quenneville added.

In addition, the IceRays have released (F) Alex Vazquez who appeared in four games, scoring once.

Corpus Christi added former USHL defenseman Wayland Williams to the squad as well. "Having the opportunity to bring in Wayland should add more depth to our D core and will bring some additional offensive punch," said Quenneville. Williams, a 6-0, 185lb native of Canton, MI played in Des Moines last year but was sidelined with an injury all season.

The IceRays are home this Thursday and Friday night against the Texas Tornado. Puck drops at 7:05PM, coverage begins at 6:50PM with the IceRays Pregame Show on SportsJuice.com, fasthockey.com, and the TuneIn Radio APP (search: icerays).
