Jackson beats New Orleans 3-1 in Wild Card game

Lafayette, LA - The Louisiana IceGators will play host to the Jackson Bandits tonight at 7:05 in Game 1 of the 2002 Kelly Cup Playoffs Southwest Division Semifinals. Jackson beat New Orleans 3-1 last night at the Mississippi Coliseum in the Southwest Division Wild Card game to advance to play the IceGators.

The first 1,000 children 12 and under at tonight's game will receive a captain Jay Murphy mini-stick, sponsored by Medical Center of Southwest Louisiana and Women's and Children's Hospital.

Chris Longo's unassisted shorthanded breakaway goal with 8:08 remaining in regulation lifted the Bandits to the win last night. New Orleans had tied the game at 1-1 at 5:07 of the third on a power play goal by Mikko Sivonen, but Longo stole a pass at the blueline, skated the length of the ice and got the puck past Ron Vogel. Richard Pitirri added an empty-net goal with a minute left. Sean Gillam also scored for Jackson, while Mike Tamburro stopped 40 shots – including 21 in a wild second period.

The IceGators will host Game 2 of the series Friday at 7:35 p.m., and then the action shifts to Jackson on Sunday for a 2 p.m. start. Louisiana will return home for Games 4 and 5, if necessary, hosting Game 4 Monday at 7:05 p.m. and Game 5 Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
