Louisiana IceGators News Release
Southaven, Mississippi -- All season long, the Louisiana IceGators have had to rely on some of their role players to fill gaps created by injuries. Troy Ofukany, the team's latest acquisition, stepped up and filled that void, scoring twice Friday to lead the Louisiana IceGators to a 4-2 victory.
Louisiana goaltender Riley Gill made several key saves during the game, stopping 23 of 25 shots on the night.
The IceGators end their weekend road trip Saturday by traveling to Alabama for a match against the Huntsville Havoc. The puck will drop at 7:05 P. M.
"We played a solid 59 minutes," said IceGators coach Kevin Kaminski. "The boys did a lot of good things, especially on defense. We held (the RiverKings) to our quota of 25 shots."
The one soft minute the IceGators played was the fourteenth minute of the second period. Matt Whitehead and Brian Yanovitch both scored to tie the game. The goals also ended Gill's 155 minute, 46 second shutout streak.
Otherwise, the IceGators dominated. Matt Robertson scored his second goal in as many games to give the IceGators a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Ofukany made it a 2-0 game with a powerplay goal early in the second period. McNeil broke the tie on a shorthanded goal with 17 seconds left in the frame. Ofakany added an insurance goal early in the third period.
Kaminski credits smart and simple play for the victory. "We were really committed to our systems and used smart energy to play two guys short," he said. "They blocked shots and used their sticks to help Gill protect home plate, and the forwards came back to help the defensemen do the job."
"I'm proud of the guys," he added. "They stepped up again and won despite the injuries and call-ups. They keep demanding winning ways from each other."
