Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA â Derek Gustafson set a new post-season IceGators record by stopping 43 shots on goal in regulation play and the IceGators earned their fourth all-time post-season shutout with tonight's 6-0 drubbing of the Pensacola Ice Pilots. The Gators have taken a 2-0 lead in the Central Division Semi-Final series and have a chance to put the first round behind them on Saturday in Pensacola.
Ed McGrane opened the scoring with his second goal in two nights. Alex Materukhin sprang Bobby Brown near the Pilots' blue line and Brown skated straight for the goal. He dodged a sprawling Pilots' defenseman and when Eklund went down for the block, Brown shot the puck across the top of the crease to McGrane, who wristed it into the open net.
Konstantin Kalmikov tallied his second short-handed goal of this series, with some help from Jamie Johnson. Johnson caught the puck in the neutral zone and zipped toward Eklund. Johnson shot the puck five-hole and Eklund popped out a short rebound. Kalmikov raced in and jammed the puck back through the five-hole for the Gators' second goal.
Kenny Corupe put up his first tally of the post-season when Bruce Richardson fought for the puck at the Pilots' goal line and slid it out to the top of the crease. Corupe faked Eklund down and then wristed the puck into the top of the net.
Richardson lit the lamp for the second short-handed goal of the period when Eklund mishandled the puck behind his own net. Richardson pick pocketed Eklund and wrapped the puck around the far post and into the empty net.
The second period saw one goal from the IceGators, a man-advantage tally from Dennis Shiryaev. He planted himself in front of Eklund's net and redirected a shot from Josh Mizerek at the blue line.
Semir Ben-Amor added one more to the board with a backhanded shot that beat Eklund through the five-hole. Kenny Corupe and Ed McGrane assisted Ben-Amor on his second goal of the post-season. Three IceGators had multi-point games as Ed McGrane, Kenny Corupe and Bruce Richardson each earned one goal and one assist.
The IceGators have a chance to clinch the Semi-Final round on Saturday when they travel to Pensacola for the third game of the best-of-five series.
