Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs took home a huge 2-1 overtime victory over the Brampton Battalion in game one of their Eastern Conference Semifinal in front of a sellout crowd of 3,145.

The IceDogs would get off to a good start, scoring the opening goal for the sixth time in seven playoff games, as Ryan Strome snapped home his sixth of the playoffs to make it 1-0 Niagara. The goal would prove to be the only one of the period, as the IceDogs carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Shots in the period favour Brampton 12-11.

The second period saw a solid performance out of both goaltenders as the score remained 1-0 until late in the period when Brampton would finally beat Mark Visentin to tie things up at 1-1 after 40 minutes. Brampton continued to outshoot Niagara after two periods, with the total favouring the visitors 25-18.

Once again, the goaltenders would be the story in the third, especially Visentin, who held the IceDogs in the game stopping all 11 shots in the period. Matej Machovsky was also perfect however, stopping all eight IceDogs shots as the teams headed to overtime. Overall shots in regulation favoured Brampton 36-26.

In overtime, the goaltenders would continue to shine, as both teams would pepper the goaltenders throughout the period. The IceDogs would have a great chance to end it when Brett Ritchie was awarded a penalty shot after a Brampton defenceman covered the puck in the crease during a scramble in front. Ritchie would prove to be unsuccessful on the penalty shot, keeping overtime and the game going. The disappointment of the missed penalty didn't last long for the IceDogs faithful as less than a minute later David Pacan would take a nice feed from Friesen and sneak one by Machovsky five hole to give the IceDogs a 2-1 overtime victory.

Visentin was spectacular in the victory stopping 44 of 45 shots for the victory.

The IceDogs will now travel to Brampton for game two on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
