PLYMOUTH - Kitchener goaltender John Gibson stopped all 40 shots he faced and Tobias Rieder and Ben Thomson scored goals as the Kitchener Rangers defeated the Plymouth Whalers, 2-0, in an Ontario Hockey League playoff game played before 3,026 Friday night at Compuware Arena.
Kitchener leads to best-four-of-seven OHL Western Conference Semifinal series, 1-game-to-0.
After a scoreless first period, Rieder scored the only goal of the second period at 19:32 with a shot from the left hashmark over the shoulder of Plymouth goaltender Scott Wedgewood.
Thomson scored the only goal of the third period, re-directing Michael Catenacci's pass while on his stomach and sliding towards the Plymouth goal.
Plymouth outshot Kitchener, 40-30.
