Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs picked up their first win of the exhibition schedule, topping the Kitchener Rangers 2-1 in a goaltending duel in Kitchener on Wednesday night!
The goaltenders were the story in the first period, especially IceDogs starting goaltender Stephen Dhillon, as both sides were held scoreless through 20 minutes. Shots after one were 18-9 for Kitchener.
The second period would see Dhillon finish up his night just prior to the midway point of the frame, as Colton Incze would take over to see his first action for the IceDogs. Dhillon would leave stopping all 24 shots he faced. Incze would continue the strong play from IceDogs goaltenders, but would finally be beaten at the 16:55 point of the second to give the home side a 1-0 lead that they would carry into the intermission. The IceDogs would outshoot the Rangers 17-13 in the period to make the shots 31-26 Rangers after two.
The third period would see the goaltenders continue to put on a show as Incze would make multiple big saves to keep the game within one. His effort would pay off with 1:20 remaining as Brendan Perlini would rip one home to tie things up at 1-1 and send the game to overtime. Shots at the end of regulation were 44-38 Kitchener.
Overtime would give the IceDogs their first taste of the OHL's new 3-on-3 overtime rule and they would like it as Johnny Corneil would finish off a pretty play to give the IceDogs a 2-1 victory! Shots in overtime were 2-1 IceDogs to make it a 45-40 final shot total in favour of the Rangers.
The IceDogs will next return to action a week from tonight as they host the visiting Windsor Spitfires in Beamsville at Fleming Arena on September 16th at 7pm. Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased at Cherry Lane located at 4230 Victoria Ave, Vineland Station, ON L0R 2E0. Cherry Lane is open Monday to Saturday from 9-5 each day.
