IceDogs Point Streak Ends with Loss to the Saginaw Spirit
September 29, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs travelled to Saginaw to close out this weekends' 3 games in 4 nights. Following last night's shoot-out loss, Niagara was loose and ready to get the game started. Knowing they will receive secondary scoring opportunities from first-year players, the task of shutting down the high-powered Spirit was less daunting.
Third year forward Andrew Bruder played in his 100th career OHL game in Saginaw.
The IceDogs' defensive efforts were on display in the first period, with Tucker Tynan making several big saves to keep the game scoreless. The IceDogs' best scoring chance came on a shorthanded breakaway for Oliver Castleman, who out-skated the Spirit defenders. On a power play late in the period, Phil Tomasino also came close to taking the lead, but was unable to beat the Saginaw goaltender, Frappier.
The Spirit opened the scoring midway through the second period as the puck trickled into the IceDogs' net. Throughout the rest of the period, Tynan made big saves to keep the 'Dogs within one goal. Drew Hunter made a big defensive effort to break up a 2 on 1 in the IceDogs' zone, eliminating the scoring threat.
Saginaw scored another goal late in the third period to take the 2-0 lead. With an empty net, Niagara pressured to get on the board, but it was the Spirit who capitalized to solidify the win with an empty net goal.
Niagara's 4-game point-streak was ended by a 3-0 loss in Saginaw.
