September 29, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release

Opening the season home at the Tribute Communities Centre, the Generals faced a division rival in the Kingston Frontenacs. This is the fourth time in the past month that these two teams had played one another, meaning there would definitely be some tensions waiting to explode at any moment.

1st Period

The Generals started the period strong offensively - spending a majority of the first 5 minutes in the offensive zone. To start the period there were several scoring opportunities, including a great 2-on-1 chance which saw Brett Neumann connect a pass with Danil Antropov to be stopped by a sprawling Frontenacs goaltender, Brendan Bonello. At 8:50, the Generals took to their first powerplay of the home season after a tripping call on Frontenacs forward Dennis Golovatchev. The Generals' onslaught was relentless, only allowing the puck out of the offensive zone on two occasions. However after mustering several shots on goal, Bonello was determined and managed to keep the score even. On the other side of the ice, Generals goalie Andrew MacLean was also strong as the Frons offense heated up towards the end of the period. The first period ended even - at zero - even though the Generals heavily outshot the Frontenacs with 11 shots to 5.

2nd Period

The second period started quickly as the Generals wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard. Whitby-born Jacob Winterton passed the puck up to a speedy Brett Neumann who broke into the zone drawing the Frontenac defenders towards the corner. Winterton then snuck into the slot and received a crisp pass back from Neumann, who then made a quick deke around Bonello to slide the puck into the net, 37-seconds into the period. Kingston was quick to answer in response breaking into the Generals zone and scoring only 56-seconds later on a quick wrist shot from Shane Wright beating Andrew MacLean high on his stick side. Quickly, both teams got on the board and the score was even at one. The next ten minutes featured an exchange of chances both ways highlighted by an Allan McShane breakaway that was ended by a backchecking Frontenacs defender. A Frontenacs tripping infraction lead to the Generals third powerplay of the night. Although the first two did not result in a goal, the team was strong offensively and were clearly poised to dent the twine. The third time was the charm as McShane broke into the offensive zone fending off Frontenacs defence and slid a pass to Danil Antropov who took a shot that was blocked by Bonello who let a juicy rebound fly back into the slot which was recovered by Generals rookie Oliver Suni, who slid the puck into an open net. The score was 2-1 Bad blood between the teams began to rise towards the end of the period as there were several post-whistle tussles. The period would end with Oshawa leading 2-1, and outshooting the Frontenacs with a whopping 24-8.

3rd Period

The third period got off to a quick start with Generals penalty at 2:06 putting the Generals shorthanded. On the ensuing penalty kill, McShane blocked a shot in the defensive zone and bolted after it as it headed towards center ice. He recovered the puck and brought it into the Frontenac zone fending off a Frons defender. He managed to retain control of the puck and make a forehand backhand deke sliding the puck past Bonello - for the Generals first shorthanded goal of this young season. Next up, a blocked Generals shot bounced over to David Jesus who made the score 4-1 by blasting the puck high stick side on a screened Bonello for his first OHL goal at 8:07 in the period. That would be it for the end of the scoring for the game.
