The Niagara IceDogs took on the London Knights tonight in front of a loud sell out crowd in the Meridian Centre. The last time these two teams faced each other, the IceDogs captured a point, falling in overtime 3-2. Coming into this game, just five points separated the league's second place Knights from the third place IceDogs.
The Knights opened the scoring to take a 2-0 lead in the first period. The IceDogs continued pushing hard, challenging Raaymakers consistently in tight. The IceDogs led the Knights in shots, with 14, after the first period.
The IceDogs' strong play and dedication to the game plan started to pay off for Niagara! The 'Dogs burst out with a 4-goal period, including one penalty shot goal! Kirill Maksimov got the period started, scoring his 12th powerplay goal of the season, and 25th of the year to break Raaymakers' shutout. Phil Tomasino and Elijah Roberts were credited with the assists on Maxi's tally. Then, just over a minute later, Ben Jones tied the game up at 2 from the hashmarks. Jacob Paquette was given the primary assist, and Ethan Sims collected his 2nd assist in as many games with the secondary! On another man advantage in the second, Akil Thomas scored while falling after being interfered with to give the IceDogs the go-ahead goal, after some pretty passing with Maksimov and Tomasino in tight! The high scoring period wasn't complete without a penalty shot. After a Knight closed his hand on the puck to prevent a goal, Ben Jones was awarded the penalty shot and scored five-hole as Raaymakers lifted his pad! The IceDogs carried a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
London capitalized twice in the third period to tie the game up at 4. The IceDogs pressed to break the tie, but 60 minutes wasn't enough. This game needed overtime. The IceDogs were assessed two penalties in the second half of the overtime period, and they nearly escaped unscathed. The Knights capitalized with 26 seconds remaining in overtime to win 5-4.
The IceDogs have picked up 2 points in their season series against London.
The 'Dogs are back in action tomorrow night as the Erie Otters make their first visit to the Meridian Centre of the season!
