IceDogs Pick up Huge 5-3 Win Over Oshawa; Retake Series Lead 3-2

March 31, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs picked up a huge 5-3 victory over the Oshawa Generals Saturday night in front of a sell out crowd at the Gatorade Garden City Complex to take a 3-2 series lead.

The first period saw the IceDogs strike first as David Pacan picked up his first of the playoffs to give the home side an important 1-0 lead only 3:22 in. Unfortunately the lead would be short lived as Oshawa would strike on the powerplay to tie things up just past the five minute mark. Those would prove to be the only two goals of the period, as the teams headed into the first intermission tied at 1-1. Shots in the period favoured the IceDogs 16-9.

Niagara would come out in the second looking to retake the lead and Myles Doan would make that happen, scoring his first of the playoffs to give the IceDogs the lead again at 2-1. Oshawa would continue to fight however and ultimately would tie things up once again, making the score 2-2 after 40 minutes.

The third period would see Niagara come out strong, as Carter Verhaeghe became the third IceDog on the night to pick up his first of the playoffs, to make it 3-2 only 1:30 in. Ryan Strome would then stretch the lead to 4-2 only a minute later, as he picked up his fourth of the series. Strome would then strike again on the powerplay just past the midway part of the third, to give Niagara a little more breathing room at 5-2. Oshawa would tighten things up scoring another with just under five to go, but that would be a close as they would get as Visentin and the rest of the IceDogs locked it down to make it a 5-3 final. Final shots favoured the IceDogs 59-25.

The IceDogs victory came thanks to a balanced offensive effort that saw five different players pick up multiple points on the night.

With the IceDogs now leading the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal 3-2, they will travel to Oshawa for game six tomorrow at 6pm, where they will hope to close out the series. Fans interested in coming on the bus trip tomorrow can contact Nick at n.williams@niagaraicedogs.net or 289-407-2851 to book their spot. The bus will leave the Gatorade Garden City Complex at 3pm and cost of the trip is $50 and includes both bus and game ticket.
