Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs outrace the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in a 6-1 game tonight. The win, the first game of a three-in-three this weekend, marks the seventh straight victory for the 'Dogs and first this season where the penalty kill didn't allow any goals against.
Less than thirty seconds into the opening frame, Akil Thomas scored to get the 1-0 lead! He slid on his side to get his unassisted goal. Later on, about midway through the period, the 'Dogs killed an almost successive four minutes of penalties!
The Soo got one on the board in the second to briefly tie the game at 1. The 'Dogs did not leave that goal unanswered! Philip Tomasino went skating along the boards and through the offensive zone to the slot where he shot. It went off the crossbar then deflected off a Soo player to get in the net. Studs skated through to the edge of the faceoff circle by the net, where Tomasino was at goal line. Tomasino passed through his legs to Castleman, who got one in the empty net behind their goalie! After a killing off another couple penalties with some 5-on-3 action, the 'Dogs got another goal just under a minute before the end of the second! After Tomasino skated around behind the net and passed to Jason Robertson, who got a clapper through the slot, ending the second period 4-1. The secondary assist went to goalie Stephen Dhillon.
A few minutes into the third, Thomas scored his second goal of the night. He snuck it just behind Soo's netminder, assisted by Robertson. Captain Ben Jones decided he wanted in on the fun and notched a goal of his own! Matt Brassard passed from the point to Thomas at the top of the faceoff circle. Jonesy, in the right place at the front of the net, scored the last goal of the game.
In tonight's 6-1 win, Thomas and Studnicka both got their 200th career OHL points and the IceDogs surpassed the Greyhounds to take sole possession of 3rd place in the league.
The 'Dogs complete the rest of three-in-three this weekend with two away games against the Kingston Frontenacs (Feb. 1) and the Ottawa 67's (Feb. 2). They come back to town on Thursday February 7th against the Mississauga Steelheads! This is the last time the 'Dogs face the Steelheads at home this regular season.
