March 18, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs picked up their 47th win of the season, finishing with a franchise record 97 points as they defeated the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 2-0 in Mississauga on Sunday afternoon.

The first period saw the IceDogs come out flying, but Mississauga starter Spencer Martin was equal to the task stopping all 19 IceDog shots to keep things scoreless after 20 minutes. Christopher Festarini was also perfect for Niagara, stopping all three Mississauga shots on the period.

Niagara would continue their domination of the play in the second, peppering Martin with another 20 shots. Martin would continue his strong play, but finally on the IceDogs 39th shot of the game, Joel Wigle would be able to jam one by to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the second. The goal would be the only one of the period as the IceDogs carried only a 1-0 lead into the third despite having out shot Mississauga 39-8 through 40 minutes.

Mississauga would get some pressure early in the third, but Festarini would be equal to the task and keep the score at 1-0. Tom Kuhnhackl would then roof one by Martin to give the IceDogs a 2-0 lead 8:12 into the third after a great setup by Freddie Hamilton. That would prove to be the final score as Festarini made 14 saves to preserve the victory and his second shutout of the season.

With the win the IceDogs finish the regular season tied with the Plymouth Whalers for the second best record in the OHL, only two points behind the London Knights for top spot in the OHL.

The IceDogs will now head into their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal with the Oshawa Generals looking to continue their strong regular season play. Things get underway with Oshawa on Thursday night at the Gatorade Garden City Complex at 7pm when the IceDogs host game one. The teams will then travel to Oshawa for game two on Friday, before returning to Niagara for game three on Sunday night at 6pm. Tickets for both games in Niagara are on sale now at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
