The Niagara IceDogs opened up the 2012 OHL playoffs in style, picking up a big 8-2 game one win over the Oshawa Generals in front of a sellout crowd of 3,145 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday night.

The first period saw the IceDogs come out flying, as Alex Friesen and Ryan Stome both struck in the first three minutes of the game to put the home side up 2-0. The game would settle down somewhat until just over midway through the period when Brett Ritchie, Andrew Agozzino and Trevor Petersen all scored in a span of just over five minutes to open things up and give the IceDogs a 5-0 lead after one. Shots in the period favoured the IceDogs 18-12.

Oshawa starter Kevin Bailie would be chased after one as the Generals went to rookie netminder Daniel Altshuller for the second. Altshuller would settle in holding the IceDogs off the scoreboard for the early part of the period, until the IceDogs would take advantage of Oshawa penalty trouble with a pair of powerplay markers from Tom Kuhnhackl and Friesen only 18 seconds apart to make it 7-0. Oshawa would not give up however, striking twice before the end of the period to make it 7-2 Niagara after two.

The third would see Friesen complete the hat trick early in the period with a powerplay goal for what would prove to be final goal of the game in an 8-2 Niagara victory. Final shot in the game were 51-35 for the IceDogs who take a 1-0 series lead.

Visentin was solid for the IceDogs, making 33 saves in the victory. The IceDogs also continued their strong special teams play, going five for eight on the powerplay and a perfect four for four on the penalty kill.

The IceDogs and Generals will get right back at it tomorrow night when the teams travel to Oshawa for game two of the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35pm.
