Majors Fall in Game One

March 22, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Ivan Telegin scored twice and Erik Bradford added an empty net goal with 49 seconds to play as the Barrie Colts took game one of their best of seven series with the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 3-1 in front of a crowd of 2,985 at the Barrie Molson Centre in Ontario Hockey League playoff action.

Kristoff Kontos scored the lone goal for the Majors, who host game two of the series tomorrow night at the Hershey Centre at 7:30pm.

Brandon Maxwell made 33 saves in a losing effort for the Majors, while Mathias Niederberger made 26 saves - including a penalty shot in the second period by Spenser Cobbold - to lead the Colts to victory.

Majors Head Coach/General Manager James Boyd was disappointed his team couldn't snatch up a big road win to start the series, but was largely satisfied with the compete level he saw from his club.

"We were in the game all night against a good team that's tough to play on their home ice.

"We need to get more pucks to the net and to create some more scoring chances both even strength and on the power play. I thought we worked hard and Maxwell was solid. It wasn't a bad opener. We need to rebound and play better offensively tomorrow night."

Kontos opened the game's scoring just 1:39 into the opening period, assisted by Sergey Kuptsov, to give the Majors the 1-0 lead.

Telegin scored his first of the night to tie the game at 1-1 at the 13:04 mark of the period, from Mark Scheifele and Anthony Camara.

The first period was the only period the Majors outshot the Colts, which was by a 13-11 margin.

Cobbold was awarded a penalty shot at 5:51 of the second period, but was turned aside by Niederberger. Instead, it was a powerplay goal by Telegin that gave the Colts their first lead and also the eventual game winner, from Steven Beyers and Daniel Erlich at 14:27 of the second period.

Bradford iced the win for Barrie with the empty net goal at 19:11, assisted by Gregg Sutch and Aaron Ekblad. Shots were 13-6 in the second period and 12-8 in the third, both favouring the Colts, for a game total of 36-27.

The Majors were held goalless on the power play, going 0-for-5 on the night. The Colts were 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

Following game two tomorrow night in Mississauga, the best of seven series shifts back to Barrie on Monday, March 26th at 7:30pm, before returning to the Hershey Centre for game four on Tuesday, March 27th at 7pm.

Tickets to all Majors home games can be purchased by visiting the Hershey Centre box office or online at www.ticketmaster.ca.
