Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs battled back to tie things at 4-4 and get a point, but ultimately could not pull out the victory, falling to the Wolves 5-4 in a shootout in Sudbury Friday night.

The first period saw the IceDogs get off to a tough start, with the home side taking a 2-0 lead 5:41 in. The second goal came on a 5 on 3 powerplay for Sudbury but, David Pacan would get the IceDogs on the board immediately after, picking up a shorthanded goal only 13 seconds later to close it to 2-1. It looked like that would be the way the first would end, but the Wolves would get a late goal with only 15 seconds left in the first period to make it 3-1 after the first.

The second saw the goaltenders take over, as Jaroslav Pavelka and Johan Mattsson held the teams off the board keeping the score at 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Things looked tough for the IceDogs early in the third as Sudbury would pick up their second powerplay goal of the game to make it 4-1. Niagara would not go away however as Freddie Hamilton and Alex Friesen would pick up goals to close it to 4-3 before Dougie Hamilton tied things up at 4-4 on the powerplay with Pavelka on the bench, sending the IceDogs to overtime for the first time this season.

Overtime would solve nothing, meaning both teams would head to their first shootout of the season. The shootout would not go the IceDogs way on this night however with Alex Friesen scoring the lone shootout goal for Niagara, while a pair of Sudbury shooters would find success to pick up the extra point for the home side.

Final shots in the game were 37-34 in favour of the IceDogs. The IceDogs were led offensively by Friesen and the Hamilton brothers on the night with each picking up a goal and an assist.

The IceDogs next are in action tomorrow night as they travel to Barrie to take on the Colts. Game time is 7:30pm and fans can catch all the action live on TVCogeco and www.thelakefm.ca.
