Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs battled back to take home a point, but would be unable to pick up the second point, falling 5-4 in a shootout to the Frontenacs in Kingston on Sunday afternoon.

The IceDogs got off to a tough start in the first, as they were unable to beat Kingston starter Mike Morrison, while Kingston was able to score a pair, sending the IceDogs into the intermission down 2-0. Shots after one were 10-8 Kingston.

The second period would see Kingston score again to extend their lead to 3-0 before Brett Ritchie would strike on the powerplay to extend his goal scoring streak to a remarkable eight games and make it a 3-1 game. The score would not last however, as Kingston would answer back only 18 seconds later to make it a 4-1 IceDogs deficit. The IceDogs would continue to battle after the Kingston goal however and would be able to cut the Kingston lead down to two once again late in the period as Brook Hiddink scored his second in as many games to make it 4-2 after 40 minutes. Shots after two continued to favour Kingston 22-17.

The IceDogs would continue to battle in the third period uping the pressure on Kingston, until Anthony DiFuscia would rip a shot home just past the midway point of the period to bring the IceDogs within one at 4-3. Niagara would keep the momentum going and then, with just under five minutes remaining, Ritchie would continue his red hot play by putting home a Ryan Strome pass to knot things up at 4-4! Chris Festarini would make some big stops in the rest of the period as the teams would exchange chances, but the score would remain tied after regulation sending the teams to overtime. Shots after regulation were 36-29 Kingston.

Overtime would solve nothing, sending the teams to a shootout. Steven Shipley and Strome would both score in the shootout, but it would not be enough as the IceDogs fell in the fifth round of the shootout, to make it a 5-4 final in favour of Kingston.

The single point for the IceDogs gave Niagara five out of a possible six points in three games this week.

The IceDogs will now return home to St. Catharines where they will play host to the Belleville Bulls on Friday night and the Sudbury Wolves on Saturday night. Tickets for these and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
