IceCaps Unveil Royal Newfoundland Regiment Jersey
January 14, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Danny Williams, president and CEO of the IceCaps, said that given the tremendous importance of this moment in the province's history it was decided by the IceCaps organization that the Royal Newfoundland Regiment would be commemorated with a tribute jersey.
"I had the tremendous pleasure of visiting Beaumont-Hamel several years ago, and I will never forget the extraordinary sense of loss mingled with such intense pride as I walked where those young men had defended the rights and freedoms we enjoy today," said Mr. Williams. "The bravery exhibited by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was one of the most tragic moments in Newfoundland and Labrador's history; and was also a defining moment as we essentially lost an entire generation of young men. In a world still ravaged by war and loss, it is our hope that this tribute jersey helps us not only to remember, but to also convey the pride and admiration we have for those who have and continue to make the ultimate sacrifice."
Mr. Williams said because of the historical and cultural significance of associating with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the jersey needed to have an uncluttered, respectful appearance. The organization also consulted with the Regiment to ensure they were pleased with the result. It also seemed appropriate to launch at The Rooms as they plan to open The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Gallery on July 1st.
Lt. Col. Paul Furlong, Commanding Officer of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment says his members are appreciative to the IceCaps for the significant gesture.
"The Royal Newfoundland Regiment is quite pleased to see the IceCaps honour our members and history in such a meaningful way," said Lt. Col. Furlong. "The jerseys look very sharp and help us continue to commemorate those that have served Newfoundland and Labrador so proudly and to preserve their memory and place in our history."
Dean Brinton, CEO of The Rooms Corporation says he is pleased the IceCaps have chosen to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel in such a fitting manner.
"Through generous gifts from our donors, The Rooms will open The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Gallery, as well as the Fortis Courtyard and Amphitheatre on July 1, 2016," said Mr. Brinton. "We are very grateful to the IceCaps for creating a jersey that commemorates this special event and continues to tell a piece of the story."
The jersey was designed by Troy Birmingham, a graphic artist from St. John's, who designed the IceCaps old third 'Cabot Tower' jerseys in 2013.
The IceCaps will wear the jerseys Friday and Saturday, February 5th and 6th versus the Utica Comets.
