IceCaps Snap Admirals' Winning Streak

St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Jason Jaffray scored his first goal since returning to the lineup as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Norfolk Admirals 3-2 Saturday night at Mile One Centre. The win snapped the Admirals' franchise and league record streak of 32 consecutive regular season wins.

Eric O'Dell scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the third period and Zach Redmond notched two points, including his third goal of the season. Mark Dekanich bounced back from a tough outing in his last start on Tuesday to pick up his second win of the season, stopping 28-of-30 shots in a solid outing for St. John's.

After a scoreless first period in which the IceCaps outshot the Admirals 16-5, Redmond finally got the scoring started midway through the second period on a broken play. Jaffray gave Redmond a return feed heading across the Admirals blueline but the puck was slowed down by an Admirals defender. However, Redmond slowed up and chipped the puck ahead, ending off the play with a well-placed wrist shot for his third of the season and a 1-0 IceCaps lead.

Jaffray made it 2-0 on the IceCaps fifth power play of the night at 13:14 of the middle frame. The captain, who returned to the lineup Wednesday after a serious injury suffered against the Admirals last March, got multiple whacks at the puck in front of the net and eventually backhanded a shot that snuck through the pads of Frederik Anderson, giving the home side a two-goal advantage.

Norfolk cut the lead in half before the end of the second period. Devante Smith-Pelly was parked at the side of the crease when a shot caromed right to him, and the former Canadian national junior team member easily backhanded the puck into the open net, making it 2-1 IceCaps heading into the third.

O'Dell's game winner came after he tried to feed Tremblay in front of the net. However the puck bounced off a skate and to the far side of the net, where O'Dell circled burying the loose puck for his third goal of the season.

Norfolk made it close later in the period on a power play goal from defenceman Sami Vatanen. After Norfolk controlled the draw in the IceCaps zone, Smith-Pelly fed Vatanen at the point and the Finnish defender blasted a slap shot through traffic that beat a helpless Dekanich high on the glove side, making it 3-2 IceCaps, but that was as close as they would come.

Both teams went one-for-five with the man advantage.

The IceCaps conclude their six-game home stand with a rematch against the Admirals Sunday afternoon before heading on the road for six games.
