Indianapolis Ice News Release
"MO-TOWN" IN BLANKING FASHION: Ice netminder Jamie Morris posted his fifth career shutout in an Ice uniform with a 2-0 blanking of the defending champion Memphis RiverKings this past Saturday night from Conseco Fieldhouse. His impressive display included 13 saves in the third period and he stopped Memphis top gunner, Don Parsons point blank on three different occasions. In his two home games this year, the fourth-year Ice goaltender is 1-0-1 with a 0.96 goals-against-average and a .974 save percentage (75/77).
BAIRD AND ST. JACQUES SUPPLY THE "O": Seven of Indy's nine goals this season have come off the sticks of forwards Jason Baird and Kevin St. Jacques. Baird has scored a point in all five games this season and leads the Ice in scoring with seven points (4G, 3A). St. Jacques has tallied a goal in each of the team's last three games and is second on the club in scoring with four points (3G, 1A).
FROM ONE SPECTRUM TO ANOTHER: In the special teams department, the Ice continues to struggle on the power play, but remains solid in the area of penalty killing. After scoring a power play goal in its first opportunity of the season, the team has gone 0-33 with the man advantage. On the flip side, the Ice has managed to kill of 23 of its opponents' 25 power play chances (92.0%).
HE'S BACK.....: Ice defenseman Kevin Popp will make his return to the line-up this Friday night against Oklahoma City. The physical blueliner has missed the first five games of the year due to a suspension that was handed down at the end of last season. The 6-2, 210-pounder was arguably the team's top defensive defenseman last year as he was the only d-man to record a positive plus minus (+5) and was one of the better players on the team's penalty kill. He also had his best scoring season as a pro with 13 points (2G, 11A) to go along with a team-leading 299 penalty minutes in 63 games of work.
ICE POTPOURRI: Jason Baird's 13 shots against Tulsa this past Friday is an Ice and CHL season high...Randy Holmes is three points shy of 450 for his pro career...Ice goaltender Shawn Silver deserved a better fate Friday night in Tulsa as he turned back 33 of 34 shots in regulation and four of seven in the shootout...Coach Ken McRae makes his first return to Austin as the Ice Head Coach as he spent the last three years as an assistant coach for the IceBats.
FROM THE LOCKERROOM: The Ice ended a ten-game winless skid (0-7-3) to Memphis with Saturday's win...The Ice is second overall in the CHL in shots per game (40.75), but first in first period shots (70) and second period shots (69)...Despite scoring only nine goals so far this year, the team has given up just 14 which is the least amount of goals allowed for the first five games of any CHL Ice team...The Ice went 2-6-0 against Oklahoma City last year and is 5-13-0 lifetime against the Blazers...In its first go-arounds with Fort Worth and Austin last season, the Ice went 1-3-1 and 1-1-1 respectively...The team did go 2-1-2 in the five combined road showdowns.
STEVE, STEVE, STEVE, STEVE: Steve Wilkos, Jerry's sidekick from the Jerry Springer Show, will be on hand this Friday when the Ice hosts the Oklahoma City Blazers at 7:00 p.m. from Conseco Fieldhouse. The famous "Steve" will be on hand to sign autographs and participate in some on-ice activities in conjunction with "College Night". On "College Night", all college students with valid ID get in for $14, $9 or $6 in games at Conseco Fieldhouse.
