Winnipeg Ice News Release
The ICE and the Blades kicked off the year 2020 with a matinee game in Saskatoon. The ICE got two opening power plays but could not connect after a handful of chances. Later in the period, Owen Pederson dropped the puck to Peyton Krebs who went behind the net and chipped himself a pass behind the defender and threw it on net and Connor McClennon got the last touch and scored his 19th of the year to give the ICE a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The ICE came out with a goal in mind in the second period. Isaac Johnson made the ICE lead 2-0 53 seconds into the second period on a great individual effort. Halfway through the period, rookie defenseman Carson Lambos scored his seventh of the season after banging in his own rebound. Shortly after that, Owen Pederson walked off the half wall into the slot area and picked the top corner to extend the ICE lead to 4-0 heading into the third period.
Just about sfive minutes into the third period the ICE found themselves on the man-advantage again and this time they made the Blades pay. Owen Pederson scored his second of the night on a great passing play with Isaac Johnson and Peyton Krebs. The ICE found themselves down a man but Connor McClennon broke free on a 2 on 1 with Jakin Smallwood and a nice feed over to Smallwood who made no mistake to make this game 6-0 for the ICE. With just over a minute left, Colton Dach scored to end the shutout bid for Liam Hughes.
Liam Hughes made 25 saves on 26 shots in the win.
