Ice Park to host food drive

Lancaster Stormers News Release

LANCASTER, Pa.-Officials at Clipper Magazine Stadium have announced a goal of 2,000 cans (or boxes) of non-perishable food during a weekend-long food drive from Jan. 25 to Jan. 28. Every skater who brings two or more cans of food to The Ice Park presented by Schwanger Bros. will receive a free skate rental for the session of his or her choice.

More than 400 skaters are enjoying Lancaster's only outdoor ice rink every day it's open-including more than 3,000 skaters who attended the park between Christmas and New Year's. Officials at the park ordered additional rental skates to keep pace with the high demand.

"We've been so pleased with attendance at The Ice Park that we wanted to give back to the communities who have supported us," Barnstormers general manager Kevin Cummings said. "Giving should be a year-round activity and we hope this food drive will again demonstrate how generous people in Lancaster and the surrounding Susquehanna Valley can be."

The food proceeds will benefit the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which serves 27 counties in central Pennsylvania. Lancaster County is one of the food bank's most active partners in the effort to reduce hunger. The majority of food drive proceeds will go directly to needy families in the Lancaster area.

"Our food donations tend to drop off significantly after the holidays, but the demand for assistance does not," said Amy Mountain, director of communications for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. "This food drive comes at an important time for us and we hope very much to reach our goal."

The food bank most needs non-perishable food items such as canned tuna, canned meats and stews, soup, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, packaged meals, packaged pasta and rice, canned and dried beans, pure fruit/vegetable juices and baby food, cereal and formula (must be within code date).

All sessions at The Ice Park at Clipper Magazine Stadium begin every other hour, on the hour and end 90 minutes later. For a complete schedule of session times and answers to frequently asked questions, visit www.lancasterbarnstormers.com or call (717) 509-4487.

The Lancaster Barnstormers will begin defense of their Atlantic League championship on May 4, 2007 when they take on the Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. Only season ticket holders can guarantee seats for opening day and the 2007 Atlantic League All-Star Game, to be held July 11 at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Single game tickets will go on sale during the Barnstormers' FanFest, scheduled for Saturday, April 14.
