Ice, Memphis Riding First Place Seesaw
December 30, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Indianapolis Ice News Release
The Indianapolis Ice held down first place in the CHL's Northeast Division for 48 hours this weekend, but Memphis earned a 6-2 win on Sunday to reclaim the top post. However, the Ice still has three games in hand with the RiverKings and has a .650 winning percentage compared to Memphis' .606 winning percentage.
SENSATIONAL START: With two more games to go to the midway mark of the season, the Ice has already wrapped up the best halfway record in Ice CHL history and the sensational start could ultimately be the second best clip in franchise history. The top two 32-game starts in franchise history were the 1989-90 Turner Cup Championship season (21-8-3) and the 1990-91 season (19-11-2). The best CHL midway mark was a 13-14-5 clip in 2000-01.
ANOTHER SILVER STRETCH: Goaltender Shawn Silver is on another one of his silver stretches as the three-time CHL Goaltender of the Week is riding a five-game win streak that includes a 1.76 goals-against-average and a .936 save percentage (132/141). It is his second stretch of this magnitude this season as he had a six-game win streak from 11/22-12/7 which also included an 0.97 GAA, two shutouts and a .966 save percentage (170/176).
ROOKIE RAGE: Balance has been the name of the game offensively for the Ice this year as contributions have come from everyone on the roster. The offensive torch was carried this past weekend by the rookie duo of Ryan Carter and Nate Elliott as the twosome tallied three of the club's seven goals in the two wins over Wichita and Bossier-Shreveport. Elliott scored his first professional goal just 1:12 into the game at Wichita, while Carter scored goals in both contests, including the game-winner on Saturday against the Mudbugs.
PLAYER NOISE: Jared Dumba has 13 points (7G, 6A) in his last nine game and his five game-winning goals on the year rank him in a tie for second in the CHL...Andrew Taylor has points in six of his last seven games (1G, 6A)...Bernie John has seven assists in his last six games and is tied for sixth among CHL d-men in points (25) and third in assists (22)...Scott Lewis has a helper in his last two games and is one game shy of 100 for his pro career...Randy Holmes has an assist in two straight games and he is three goals shy of 200 for his pro career.
TEAM NOISE: With its win over the "Bugs" on Saturday, the Ice has a victory against everybody in the Northern Conference...Overall, the team is 9-0-4 against members of the Northwest Division and 16-6-5 against the entire conference...Indy has held its opponents to just 2.43 goals/game, good for third best in the CHL...The Ice is 9-1-5 in one-goal games this year and 12-3-1 when scoring the first goal of the game.
