CHL Names Players of Week
December 30, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Laredo right wing Joey Sewell and Austin netminder Matt Barnes have been selected as the Central Hockey League's Player and Goaltender of the Week for Week 11 of the CHL season. Both Sewell and Barnes come from the CHL's Southeast Division, where the Ice Bats and Bucks occupy the top two positions. Sewell led Laredo to three consecutive victories during the past week, while Barnes won both his starts for Austin. Sewell is the third Laredo player selected for a CHL honor this season (joining Dave Gove and Chris Grenville), while Barnes earns his fourth CHL honor after being named Goaltender of the Week in both Weeks 1 and 3, and Goaltender of the Month for November.
Sewell's week began with his week in fine fashion by scoring a hat-trick and adding an assist in a 7-2 home win over San Angelo December 26th. The following night he added his 15th goal of the year in a 4-3 win at San Angelo to complete a home and home series sweep. Saturday night, he delighted the capacity crowd of 8,002 in Laredo with two more goals in a 6-2 home victory over Corpus Christi. Sewell's 17 goals for the season have him tied for 7th place in the CHL goal-scoring race.
Barnes has been nothing short of superb this season for Austin, and his outstanding play continued this week with back-to-back wins over Corpus Christi. He made 35 saves in a 3-1 road win December 26th, then turned aside 29 shots at home the following night to record a 2-0 win and his 5th shutout of the season. Barnes' 1.52 goals against average continues to lead all CHL goaltenders, as does his 94.7 save percentage.
