Ice Flyers Win 2-1 in a Shootout, Extend Streak

PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Ice Flyers hosted the Peoria Rivermen for the first time this season and came out with a 2-1 shootout win despite a solid performance in net by Peoria's Kyle Rank.

The first was scoreless for over 10 minutes until Peoria's Matt Viola scored with 9:24 remaining in the period. Less than three minutes later, Jeremy Gates picked up his first goal of the season in just his second game since signing with the team. John Dunbar and Steve Whitely assisted on the goal that came with 6:34 left in the first. The Ice Flyers kept the pressure on Peoria goalie Kyle Rank all period and out shot the Rivermen 16-8.

The second and third periods were scoreless affairs despite the Ice Flyers out shooting the Rivermen 30-7 in the final two periods. Both teams had a key opportunities that were answered with key saves and great shot blocks.

The game was still scoreless through the overtime period so Pensacola and the Rivermen headed to a shootout still tied 1-1. Chris Greene scored for Peoria while Dunbar and Joe Caveney tallied for Pensacola to solidify the win.

Ross MacKinnon stopped 17 of the 18 shots Peoria put on net to pick up his 20th win of the year. MacKinnon's efforts earned him the third star and Caveney was named the first star.

The Ice Flyers will take on these same Rivermen again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. It'll be Fan Appreciation Night as it will be the final regular season home game.
