COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announce that recently signed goaltender, Shannon Szabados, will start Saturday night's home game against the Knoxville Ice Bears. Szabados joined the Cottonmouths and was introduced during a press conference Thursday at the Columbus Civic Center.
The Edmonton, AB, Canada native is a former teammate of current Snake's players Jordan Draper, Andy Willigar and Captain Kyle Johnson at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Szabados' start will make her the first female to play hockey in the SPHL since its inception ten years ago.
"Shannon has looked phenomenal in practice in her short time with us. She hasn't missed a beat since the Olympics wrapped three weeks ago," assistant head coach Brad Prefontaine said. "We would love to see a full arena to support our newest Snake as she makes her professional debut."
The Cottonmouths game on Saturday is slated to start at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:30pm. Matt Gingera bobbleheads will be given away to the first 1,000 fans who enter the arena with a paid admission. The Cottonmouths wrap up the week's action at home with a 4pm Sunday start on Free Kids Day. Free Kids Coupons are available through the Cottonmouths facebook page and one lucky fan, 18 or older, will walk away with $300 in scratch off tickets courtesy of the Georgia Lottery during our first intermission parachute drop.
