Ice Flyers Score First but Lose Tough Battle

March 13, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

The Ice Flyers knew heading into tonight's game that it would be a tough, physical battle and this game was everything they expected. It was a back-and-forth game with tons of hits and chippiness.

The first period saw hit after hit but no goals were scored. Both teams had their fair share of scoring chances but couldn't convert.

In the second period, the Ice Flyers would open the scoring at the 4:10 mark when Ryan Hohl took a pass from Matt Robertson and fired a beautiful backhanded shot past Columbus' Ian Vigier. Tyler Soehner picked up the other assist. The Cottonmouths' Peter MacDougall tied the game up at 1 just before the 8 minute mark and Sam Bowles would put the Snakes in the lead 2-1 with a power play goal with 2:57 remaining in the 2nd.

The 3rd period saw the Ice Flyers try to tie it up and Vigier stood on his head to maintain the Columbus lead. The Ice Flyers began the period with 1:58 left on a power play and had another chance about 14 minutes in but couldn't capitalize. With 45 seconds left, the Ice Flyers pulled Jesse Kallechy in favor of a sixth skater but Columbus scored and empty net goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Kallechy turned aside 19 of the 21 shots his faced and was dealt his first loss in an Ice Flyers jersey. Ryan Hohl was named the 3rd star.

The Ice Flyers will be back on the road this weekend facing off against the Knoxville Ice Bears on Friday and the Fayetteville FireAntz on Saturday.
