Surge Victorious Over RiverHawks in a Shootout

March 13, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks played one of their best defensive games of the season, but unfortunately so did the Mississippi Surge, as the Surge edged out the RiverHawks 1-0 in a shootout Tuesday night in Biloxi, MS.

Surge rookie forward Nick Guran scored in the fifth round of the shootout in order to secure the victory and the extra point for his club. Despite not scoring a goal, the RiverHawks earned a point in the standings for forcing the game to extra time.

Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley was the star of the night, making 23 stops in regulation time and in the overtime period, and stopping the RiverHawks on all five shootout opportunities. The victory was his 18th of the season and it was his second shutout of the year.

Overshadowed in the game was the performance of RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis. Olthuis stopped all of the 17 shots fired at him during the game, and the first four shootout attempts before Guran finally beat him.

The point achieved by the RiverHawks gives them an eight point lead over the second place Columbus Cottonmouths who have five games remaining in their season, and a nine point lead over the third place Knoxville Ice Bears who have just six games remaining. With the victory, the Surge leap frog the Pensacola Ice Flyers into fourth place in the SPHL standings.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Saturday, March 17th as they play the Cottonmouths. The RiverHawks will be wearing specially designed St. Patrick's Day jerseys that will be auctioned off immediately following the game, with proceeds going to the Vision Discovery Institute at the Georgia Health Sciences University. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
