Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Ice Flyers and Mississippi Surge renewed their rivalry Saturday night in Biloxi at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The Ice Flyers rebounded after their season-opening loss last night with a 2-0 victory over the Surge.

Ice Flyers' goaltender Steve Christie recorded the shutout as Mississippi narrowly outshot Pensacola 29-28 in the game. The power play for the Ice Flyers went 1 for 9, while the Surge went 0 for 6.

This completes the weekend for both the Ice Flyers and the Surge, as they will spend the entire week preparing for game two of their season series on Friday, Nov. 2 for the Ice Flyers' home opener on Tom Thumb Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center.

The first frame had action at both ends of the ice, but Christie and Surge's netminder Kiefer Smiley stood tall, not letting a single shot by them.

Pensacola's first goal of the game was scored on the power play late in the second period. Rookie defenseman Jeremy Gates buried a rebound past Smiley, with Ryan Raven and Patrick Knowlton drawing the assists.

Nearly half way through the third, the Ice Flyers would get an insurance marker, as defenseman Tyler Miller joined the rush and scored on a rebound. This made the score 2-0 for the Ice Flyers, and this is how it would end.

Jordan Chong, Jeremy Gates and Tyler Miller led the way for the Ice Flyers in shots with four apiece, while the Surge's Tommy Lange had six shots on goal, Shawn Skelly and Jeff Grant had five each.

For the Ice Flyers' home opening weekend on Nov. 2 and 3, fans are encouraged to bring food donations in support of Manna Food Pantries. With any donation, fans can enter to win a team-autographed jersey. One winner will be selected each night.

Single game tickets are available now, as well as season ticket packages that fit any budget.
