Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers (22-15-3) downed the Fayetteville FireAntz (21-16-3) 3-1 on Sunday to take sole possession of third place in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings.
The Ice Flyers' first line put some work in early in the first to bust open a 2-0 lead within the first three minutes of the game. Joe Caveney carried the puck up the right wing before passing to Adam Pawlick and Pawlick in turn found Corey Banfield crashing the crease. Banfield redirected Pawlick's pass behind Parker Van Buskirk to open the scoring just 1:51 into the game. Less than 30 seconds later, Banfield returned the favor and gave the puck to Pawlick who then found twine. Caveney picked up an assist on the second goal as well.
The Ice Flyers extended their lead to 3-0 pretty much halfway through the game. Jeremy Gates joined the rush and skated towards the slot. Stephen Buco hit him with a perfect pass and Gates fired a quick shot past Van Buskirk. Buco had the only assist on Gates' sixth goal of the season that came with 10:01 left in the second period.
Ice Flyers goalie John McLean kept his shutout bid alive when he stopped Josh McQuade when the FireAntz were awarded a penalty shot 5:15 into the third. Unfortunately, McLean's bid was denied after a failed clear by the defense resulted in the puck trickling into the net. Andrew Darrigo scored the lone goal for Fayetteville with 1:37 left in the third.
McLean stopped 24 of Fayetteville's 25 shots to earn his 11th win of the season and improve to 11-6-2. Pensacola swept the Three Stars with Caveney being third, Pawlick second, and Banfield first.
Sunday's game $3,610 donated to the tornado relief efforts for a grand total of $8,641 donated this weekend.
The Ice Flyers will be on the road next weekend for a three-game set against the Peoria Rivermen. Puck drops for Friday and Saturday's games inside Carver Arena at the Peoria Civic Center are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Central with Sunday's game scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
