Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers played Tuesday night in Southaven, MS. and took on the Mississippi RiverKings and came out on top 3-2 in an overtime victory that has put the Ice Flyers back on top of the SPHL standings.

The RiverKings had to play shorthanded a few times in the first period as they got into penalty trouble. A former RiverKing, Justin MacDonald, made them pay when he scored on the power play, opening the scoring and putting the Ice Flyers up 1-0 late in the first period.

It was Pensacola that put themselves in penalty trouble in the second, including a brief 5-on-3. But they ended up killing all eight minutes of penalties and retaining the 1-0 lead going into the final period.

Mississippi was shorthanded early in the third and Pensacola capitalized once again. This time it was Jordan Chong, who has now scored once in each of the last four games.

The RiverKings then began to fight back. With 8:49 remaining, Matt Harrington banged home a rebound from a bad angle that beat Ice Flyers' netminder Ross MacKinnon as he was trying to regain his position in the net. Then just over four minutes later, Mike MacDonald had a redirected shot land right on his stick and scored to tie the game at two.

The game would go into overtime. After each team had their scoring chances, Pensacola got an odd-man rush. Defenseman Steve Bergin stepped into a shot and scored to win the game in overtime, 3-2.

Pensacola slightly edged Mississippi in shots on goal, 34-33. The Ice Flyers capitalized twice on four power play chances, while the RiverKings went 0 - 6.

The RiverKings host the IceGators on Friday and travel to Columbus on Saturday. Pensacola plays two road games this weekend. They play in Huntsville on Friday and Knoxville on Saturday.
