Ice Flyers Close 2013 with a Win, Beat Gators 3-2 in OT

PENSACOLA, FL. (December 29, 2013) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers hosted the Louisiana IceGators with a shot to take sole possession of second place and did just that. The Ice Flyers were finally able to top the IceGators with a 3-2 overtime victory with 2,889 fans inside the Hangar.
The Ice Flyers opened the scoring when Adam Pawlick knocked in a rebound during a scramble in front of Louisiana's Kiefer Smiley. Brett Lutes and John Dunbar assisted on the goal that came 6:33 into the first. Louisiana tied the game up with a power play goal by Bret Peppler a little less than three minutes later. Pensacola was able to regain the lead when Justin Alonzo backhanded in a shot from right to the left side of the net. The power play goal was scored with 4:30 left in the first and assisted by Corey Banfield and Podge Turnbull.
The IceGators tied the game 5:05 into second when Jason Cohen fired a shot right over Ross MacKinnon's glove. Cohen's goal proved to be the only goal in a period where the IceGators outshot Pensacola 14 to 9.
The third period was scoreless so the teams headed to overtime still tied at two. It didn't take long until the Ice Flyers won when Turnbull pounded home a rebound of a Shaun Arvai shot. Arvai had the only assist on Turnbull's game winning goal.
MacKinnon stopped 25 of the 27 shots Louisiana threw his way. Pensacola swept the Three Stars with Pawlick being named third, Alonzo the second, and Turnbull was named the first star.
The Ice Flyers' next game is this Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at 7:05 p.m. as they travel to Lafayette, Louisiana to take on these same Louisiana IceGators.
