Brandon, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings troubles on home ice continued Saturday night as the defending Western Hockey League Champion Kootenay Ice built up a 5-0 second period lead and cruised to a 7-3 victory before 3,857 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.

After scoring two first period goals, the Ice scored three times in the first eight minutes of the second and never looked back as they handed the Wheat Kings their fifth straight setback on home ice. The game was Brandons fourth and final home game in January - a month that has seen the Wheat Kings compile a 2-7-0-1 record.

Jesse Ismond and Levi Cable scored two goals each for the winners, who will return home to face the Wheat Kings in Cranbrook on Tuesday night. Jagger Dirk, Joe Antilla and Brock Montgomery rounded out the scoring for the Ice, who outshot the home team 39-36.

Jens Meilleur, Michael Ferland and defenceman Ryley Miller scoring in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who will now head out for a 4-game in five night western road trip. In addition to Tuesday's game against Kootenay, Brandon will play in Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer.

With the win, the Ice improved their record to 27-13-3-3, good for third place in the WHL's Eastern Conference.

The Wheat Kings meanwhile saw their record slip to 23-22-1-2, good for 49 points and the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Brandon won't play at home again until Friday, February 3rd when the Lethbridge Hurricanes will pay a vist.
